Green Knights slip past Grinnell netters in battle of MWC unbeaten teams

DE PERE, Wis. - The Grinnell College and St. Norbert College volleyball teams have a recent history of thrilling matches, and Friday night was no different.

The Midwest Conference unbeaten teams squared off in Wisconsin, with the Green Knights winning three close sets by scores of 25-20, 25-21 and 27-25. Grinnell, which had its nine-match winning streak stopped, moved to 4-1 in the MWC and 19-3 overall. St. Norbert moved to 5-0 in the league and 19-6 overall.

Kaylin Kuhn '21 had 13 kills and two service aces for Grinnell to go along with 10 digs and four block assists. Julianna Roth '22 contributed 22 assists and Anna Killin '22 came up with five block assists. Joining Kuhn in double-digit digs were Payton Lowrey '22 with 15 and Roth with 14.

Grinnell took a 6-4 lead in the opening set with an ace by Kuhn, and later led 9-8. Kuhn's kill gave the Pioneers their final lead of 18-17 before the Green Knights opened things up with a four-point run on their way to victory.

The second set went back and forth, with Grinnell taking a 13-12 lead on Kuhn's kill before St. Norbert used a five-point run for a 17-13 edge. The hosts never looked back after that.

The third set saw the Pioneers rally from a one-point deficit with a five-point run to take a 19-15 lead as Kuhn had an ace and Roth and Rachel Woock '23 kills.

St. Norbert rallied to force a tie before Grinnell reached set point at 24-22 on a Green Knight service error and kill by Killlin. The Green Knights then tied it at 24-all when Emmy Nyquist '23 recorded a kill to again move Grinnell within set point.

However, the Green Knights scored three in a row to secure the win.

Grinnell remains in Wisconsin Saturday for a MWC match at Ripon College. Action begins at 1 p.m.
