CHICAGO – A stellar record-breaking season drew to a close for the Grinnell College volleyball team in the opening round of the NCAA Division III Tournament Friday afternoon.
Â
The Pioneers held their own in their first trip to the national stage but lost in three sets to fourth-ranked Carthage College of Kenosha, Wis. The Pioneers battled on even terms early in the first two sets before losing 25-14 and 25-16, and then went toe-to-toe in the third set before falling 25-23.
Â

The Pioneers established a program record for wins while finishing at 26-5. Carthage advances to Saturday's regional semifinal with a 28-3 mark.

Â
However, the Lady Reds rallied with four consecutive points. Grinnell was tied for the final time at 8-all on Killin's kill before Carthage went on a 12-3 run on its way to victory.
Â
Grinnell fell into a 4-2 hole in the third set, but came back strong and gained a 7-6 lead on
