Grinnell men's soccer team puts on record-setting performance in finale

JACKSONVILLE, Ill. – The Grinnell College men's soccer team finished the 2019 season off in the right way Saturday, toppling two school records in a wild 4-3 victory at Illinois College.

The Pioneers finished 2019 with new school marks for points with 115 and assists with 35. The previous bests were 214 points, set in 1994 and again in 2015, and 31 assists, which was established last year.

Grinnell fired off 28 shots in Saturday's win, just missing the program's all-time top 10 list for shots in a match. The Pioneers held shots advantages of 14-3 in the first half and 14-6 in the second.

Jasper Yang '21 scored twice for Grinnell to boost his team-high total to 12, and Ray Goedeker '22 also scored twice. Mikoto Kobayashi '20 had two assists as he leads the team with seven. Both marks by Yang and Kobayashi are in the program's top 10 for a season.

Illinois College got on the board in the fourth minute, but Goedeker countered two minutes later on Kobayashi's assist. Kobayashi connected with Goedeker again in the 20th minute, as the latter tallied his sixth goal of the season for a 2-1 lead. However, the Blueboys scored four minutes later to tie it.

Yang found the back of the net in the 25th minute to make it 3-2 at halftime. The Blueboys scored in the 51st minute to force yet another tie, but Yang finished off the win on a score with nine minutes to go as Kyle Buse '20 and Henry Cladouhos '22 teamed up on the assists. Cladouhos has four assists this year, while it was Buse's first.

Yang finished with nine shots for Grinnell, Zac Reeves '20 had five and Goedeker three. Jared Cloutier '20 and John Riley O'Toole '22 teamed up for the victory at keeper. O'Toole had two saves in the final 45 minutes.

Grinnell finishes at 7-9-1 overall and 3-5-1 in the Midwest Conference, while Illinois College wraps up the season at 6-12-2 overall and 2-7 in the league.
