Pioneer softball team battles evenly with Benedictine in hits department, but still loses

CLERMONT, Fla. – The Grinnell College softball team was even in the hits department with its foe in the second game of Tuesday's action at Legends Way Fields, but Benedictine College came up with the timely hits in an 8-0 victory over the Pioneers.

Grinnell and the Eagles each had eight hits in the contest, with Leila Bishop-Parise '21 and Emily Jordan '19 getting two each. Benedictine scored twice in the first inning before Grinnell threatened in the third, loading the bases as Megan Gardner '20 singled to right and Bishop-Parise and Sidney Litke '19 each earned infield singles. However, all three were stranded.

Benedictine added another run in the fourth and two in the sixth to secure the win.

Earlier in the day, the Pioneers lost a 15-0 decision to unbeaten Calvin College, a team receiving votes for the national rankings. Fielding miscues cost the Pioneers throughout the game, as they committed five errors.

Grinnell managed four hits in the game, as Ashley Wehrenberg '19 doubled and Flynn Johnson '21, Jordan and Mikyla Murphy '21 all singled. Calvin scored in all five innings, including four-run tallies in the fourth and fifth frames.

Grinnell has a day off to regroup before meeting Concordia University of Wisconsin and Marian University on Thursday.
