Grinnell softball team pounds out season-high hit total against Loras

DUBUQUE, Iowa – After being shut out in the opening game of Tuesday's doubleheader, the Grinnell College softball team's bats came alive in the nightcap.

The Pioneers rapped out a season-best 11 hits against Loras College in a 9-6 loss, surpassing the previous high of 10. Mya Davis '21 led the charge with a season-best three hits.

Leila Bishop-Parise '21 and Darice Wheeler '21 each added two hits to the Pioneers' attack, including a double apiece. Lily Seibert '19 also doubled during the game.

The Pioneers jumped out to an early lead in the top of the first when Ashley Wehrenberg '19 plated a run with a groundout to first base, scoring Bishop-Parise. Loras struck for three runs in the bottom of the first, but just like that Grinnell (2-12) tied it with two in the second. Mikyla Murphy '19 scored on a wild pitch and Bishop-Parise rapped an RBI single, scoring Seibert.

The Duhawks put up five runs in the bottom of the inning for an 8-3 edge. Grinnell made things interesting in the third with three runs as Wheeler scored on an error by the right fielder, Davis hit an RBI single to right to score Wehrenberg and Bishop-Parise was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to score Emily Jordan '19.

Grinnell relief pitcher Elle Adams '22 held Loras in check the final four innings, allowing just four hits and a run while striking out one. But the Pioneers were unable to score in that span as Loras (9-10-1) completed the sweep.

The Duhawks limited the Pioneers to three hits in the first game, a 10-0 Loras victory. Flynn Johnson '21 – who moved up to eighth on the program's career putouts list with 325 - had a double for Grinnell, while Wheeler and Wehrenberg each singled. Wheeler posted three strikeouts at the pitcher spot.

Grinnell travels to Storm Lake on Thursday for a doubleheader against Buena Vista University.
