Pioneer softball team makes history by breaking school mark for MWC victories

APPLETON, Wis. - Having already clinched a trip to the Midwest Conference Tournament on Friday, the Grinnell College softball team made Sunday one for the record books.

By winning the second game of a doubleheader against Lawrence University by a 12-2 score, Grinnell set a school record for conference victories while improving to 13-5 in the league and 18-20 overall. Lawrence fell to 8-8 in the MWC and 12-20 overall.

Darice Wheeler '19 tied the Grinnell school record for walks in a career with 50 during the doubleheader, which saw Lawrence win the opener 3-1.

The Pioneers pounded out 13 hits in the second game, including three singles by Flynn Johnson '21, a homer and double from Lily Seibert '19, home run by Wheeler '19, triple by Maddie Matsubara '22, double from Sidney Litke '19 and two singles by both Leila Bishop-Parise '21 and Mya Davis '21.

Elle Adams '22 came through with a solid pitching performance, giving up eight hits and striking out one while getting the win.

The Pioneers had little trouble in the game, breaking out to a 7-0 lead through the first three innings. Matsubara had an RBI triple to center in the first and Wheeler knocked in a run on a groundout. In the second, Bishop-Parise had an RBI single to right and Seibert stole home for a 4-0 lead. Ashley Wehrenberg '19 scored on a passed ball in the third, Johnson hit a sacrifice fly to center and Seibert bashed her first career homer, a towering shot over the left-center field fence.

Lawrence scored once in the fourth before the Pioneers put up two runs in the fifth as Litke hit an RBI double to center and Bishop-Parise plated a run on a groundout. Lawrence kept the game going with a run in the fifth, but the Pioneers finished it off in the sixth via the mercy rule as Wheeler belted a homer to left, Davis scored on a wild pitch and Johnson hit an RBI single to left.

Matsubara had two of Grinnell's three hits in the opener, including a triple. Seibert hit a double for the Pioneers, whose lone run came in the third when she scored on an error. Lawrence had two runs in the second inning and one in the sixth. Wheeler tossed a four-hitter and struck out three batters.

Besides tying the school walks record, Wheeler increased her Grinnell career record leading homer total to 31 and Johnson tied the school record for sacrifice flies wit five. Jordan is second in games started with 138, Wehrenberg is eighth in at-bats with 356 and fourth in fielding assists with 240, Bishop-Parise moved up to seventh in runs scored with 67 and Johnson is fourth in fielding chances with 517.

The Pioneers will compete in the 2019 MWC Tournament this weekend.
