WAVERLY, Iowa – Grinnell College's volleyball team wrapped up the Wartburg Tournament Saturday with a four-set loss to the host school.
Set scores, in favor of the winners, were 25-18, 25-19, 16-25 and 25-19. Grinnell is now 10-2 on the season and Wartburg improved to 7-4.
Grinnell had a balanced attack at the net, with
Rachel Woock '23 coming up with 12 kills and
Anna Killin '22 and
Olivia Jensen '22 10 each. Killin also hit .421.
Julianna Roth '22 contributed 38 assists and served up three aces, while Killin had four blocks. In the digs department, leaders were
Payton Lowrey '22 (18), Woock (14),
Kaylin Kuhn '21 (13), Roth (11) and
Madison Smith '20 (11).
Grinnell led the first set 18-17 before the Knights scored eight straight points to win. The Pioneers were within 18-17 in the second set following Killin's kill, but the Knights responded with a key five-point run on their way to another win.
The Pioneers fell behind 4-1 in the third set, but then came back on fire with a 7-1 run that included two kills by Killin and one from Woock. Later, leading 14-10, Grinnell iced the win with a five-point run with the aid of Roth's serve. She had two aces in that span and Kuhn a kill as the Pioneers won with ease.
Grinnell led the fourth set 8-7 after Woock's kill, but the Knights rebounded to take the lead and eventually the win.
The Pioneers have some time off before hosting the Grinnell Tournament next weekend. The Pioneers' first foe Friday at Darby Gymnasium will be Alverno College at 5 p.m.
