GRINNELL, Iowa – There were some chances for the Grinnell College football team in Saturday afternoon's contest with Macalester College, but five turnovers sank the Pioneers as they lost a 42-3 decision at Rosenbloom Field.
Daniel Carter '22 rushed for a career-high 138 yards and
Rick Johnson '21 added a career-best 11 tackles for the Pioneers, who are 0-3 on the season as Macalester improved to 1-2.
Carter gained his yardage on 31 carries and had two receptions for 37 yards.
Max Hill '20 added 37 yards on three catches and
Avery Hootstein completed 8-of-19 passes for 94 yards.
Defensively, besides Johnson,
Anthony Johnson '22 recorded eight tackles,
Mushadda Morocco '23 had six and
Jelani McCray '21 added five. Johnson and Morocco each had sacks.
Macalester jumped out to a 21-0 lead by the end of the first period and was up 35-0 by halftime. Grinnell drove into Macalester territory three times in the first half, including late when the Pioneers reached the Scots' 15-yard line before turning the ball over on downs.
Grinnell took the opening kickoff of the second half and reached Macalester's 14-yard line before that drive was thwarted by an interception. The Pioneers' next drive, which also reached Scots' territory, also ended with an interception.
Grinnell fell behind 42-0 by the end of the third period before getting on the board in the fourth with an eight-play, 33-yard drive. Carter had a 14-yard rush on the series that was halted at Macalester's 18-yard line.
Ricky Morri '23 calmly lined up to boot a 33-yard field goal with 5:37 left in the game, giving the Pioneers' their first points of the season.
Grinnell is on the road next Saturday, meeting St. Norbert College in De Pere, Wis. Kickoff is at 1 p.m.
