Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | Ted Schultz

Offense goes wild for Pioneer women's soccer team in 7-0 blanking of Buena Vista

GRINNELL, Iowa – When it rained, it poured for the Grinnell College women's soccer team Saturday.

After going their first two contests without scoring a goal, the Pioneers erupted for seven on their way to a 7-0 shutout over Buena Vista University at Springer Field. A six-goal outburst in the second half sparked the Pioneers, who improved to 1-2.

Grinnell fired off 38 shots in the game, including 21 on goal, while holding the Beavers to no shots.

The goal total is Grinnell's highest since scoring seven against Illinois College on Sept. 30, 2017. The seven-goal victory is the largest winning margin for the Pioneers since an 8-0 win over Rockford College on Oct. 12, 2014 and six goals in a half are the most since the Pioneers scored seven against Illinois College on Sept. 27, 2008.

The goals were spread among six players, with Samantha Reid '23 scoring twice for her first collegiate goals. Also finding the back of the net were Valencia Alvarez '20, Alyssa Radakovich '21, Esmé Kayim-Yanko '21, Julia Sheehan-Klenk '23 and Madeleine Dellinger '22.

Elizabeth Hunt '21 and Hannah Malicky '22 combined on the shutout at keeper.

Alvarez broke a scoreless tie right before halftime as she split the defense in the middle of the box and scored in the 43rd minute. Crys Moosman '21 was credited with the assist.

The goals were fast and furious in the second half, starting with Radakovich's in the 53rd minute on an assist by Alvarez. On the play, Radakovich faked out the goalie and scored from the center of the box. In the 56th minute it was Kayim-Yanko's turn as she scored from deep outside the box in the center.

It was then Sheehan-Klenk in the 64th minute when she scored off a rebound after the ball came off the post from Radakovich. Dellinger added a goal two minutes later on an assist from Sheehan-Klenk while scoring on a fast break shot in the clear.

Reid's first goal came in the 79th minute on a cross from Moosman, and she added her other goal in the 88th minute on a cross from Maeve Tanona '23.

Alvarez finished with 10 of Grinnell's 38 shots, Simo Bambi '20 added seven, Reid had five and Anna Engelhardt '21 and Moosman tallied three apiece.

The Pioneers are back at it Sunday with a game at Carleton College. Kickoff is at 3:30 p.m.
