Grinnell volleyball team claims ACM Tournament title while staying unbeaten

GRINNELL, Iowa – Simply impressive.

Those two words describe the Grinnell College volleyball team this weekend. The Pioneers wrapped up the Associated Colleges of the Midwest (ACM) Tournament title Saturday by sweeping Luther College in three sets at Darby Gymnasium to finish the tourney 3-0.

The Pioneers also added to their unblemished season record, moving to 8-0 on the year. The 25-19, 26-24, 25-18 win capped the weekend for the Pioneers, who won nine of 10 sets they played. The win also marked Grinnell's fifth in 20 tries against the Norse, and the first since 1999.

Kaylin Kuhn '21, who earned All-Tournament Team honors, was impressive Saturday with a .367 hitting efficiency and 15 kills. Rachel Woock '23, another All-Tournament Team performer, had 11 kills while hitting .276.

Grinnell served up eight aces, with Kuhn getting three of those and Julianna Roth '22 a pair. Roth added 31 digs, while Anna Killin '22 came up with six blocks. Payton Lowrey '22 and Woock had 11 and 10 digs, respectively.

The Pioneers took command of the first set early. Leading 9-6, they went on a five-point run behind the serving of Madison Smith '20. Woock had a kill and block in that span as the Pioneers sailed to victory.

The second set was back and forth the whole way, with Grinnell coming back from a 20-19 deficit to go up 21-20. It was later tied at 24-all when a bad set by Luther gave Grinnell a point, and Killin and Hannah Taylor '21 finished it off with a combo block.

The key run in the third set was a 6-0 burst on Roth's serve, in which she had an ace. Kuhn added a kill during the rally which saw a 15-14 Grinnell deficit turn into a 20-15 lead. The Pioneers kept it up from there, finishing it on Lowrey's ace serve.

Grinnell returns to the home court Thursday when Simpson College visits. Match time is 7 p.m.
