Grinnell College Athletics Department Statement on Racial Violence

During the past few months, and for many years before that, several atrocities have occurred in the US through systemic racism and violent acts of police brutality. As an Athletic Department, in support of Black Lives Matter, we humbly and respectfully hope to create positive dialogue and change.

The senseless deaths of three unarmed Black Americans, George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery and Breonna Taylor, is abhorrent and heightens our awareness of the deep inequities and injustices in our society. As Pioneers – athletes, coaches, and alumni – we need to rally for one another now as members of our community are hurting.

While the current protests for racial justice and equality are larger and more widespread than we've seen in the past, our nation's history tells us that they often end with little real change enacted. In the hope of producing lasting change, Pioneer Athletics commits to speaking out against and striking down racism, police brutality, and other societal injustices.

* We will critically reexamine current and future policies through an anti-racist lens
* We will create diverse and inclusive spaces, by developing recruitment practices to enroll students and employ professionals from underrepresented groups, and welcome and support people from diverse backgrounds
* We will coordinate involvement in community action programs, utilizing the model of service and social innovation

As in sport, the work of anti-racism takes practice, necessitates commitment, and is essential to create a better world. We will work together, united for positive change.
