Grinnell netters take 5-set thriller to beat UW-Platteville for first time in program history

PLATTEVILLE, Wis. - Entering this season, Grinnell College's volleyball team had never beaten a team from the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) in the program's 47-year history.

Now, the Pioneers have two wins over a WIAC member in one season after disposing of the University of Wisconsin-Platteville in a thrill-a-minute, five-set marathon that lasted more than two hours. The 20-25, 28-26, 19-25, 25-21, 19-17 victory was Grinnell's first over UW-Platteville in nine tries.

Three times Grinnell staved off match point in the fifth set to improve to 17-10, tying the second-highest win total in program history.

Grinnell fell behind 4-2 in the final set, but raced back with a 7-2 run to go ahead 9-6. Jenna Keller '24 and Kaylin Kuhn '22 each had kills to spark the rally.

However, UW-Platteville rallied to tie the contest at 9-all. The match was tied at 10, 11, 12 and 13, as well. UW-Platteville had match-point leads of 14-13, 15-14 and 16-15, but each time was shut down by the Pioneers. Keller's kill tied the set at 14, a combo block from Malaina Miles '24 and Julianna Roth '23 forced a tie at 15 and Olivia Jensen's '22 kill made it 16-all.

Sophie Weber's '25 ace put Grinnell at match point before the hosts tied it at 17-apiece. However, Woock and Kuhn pounded down consecutive kills to send the visitors to victory.

After losing the first set, Grinnell trailed the second 25-24 and 26-25 before a Keller kill, bad set by the hosts and ace serve from Kuhn tied the match at a set apiece.

UW-Platteville (11-14) took the third set, but Grinnell came back in the fourth. Tied at 17-all, the visitors reeled off six points in a row as Keller had two kills, Payton Lowrey '22 an ace, Jensen and Woock a combo block and Keller and Jensen another block.

Grinnell later went ahead 24-20 on a UW-Platteville service error before Woock finished off the win with a kill to prepare the table for the exciting fifth set.

Grinnell had season-highs of 103 digs and eight total blocks in the match. Keller led Grinnell at the net with 17 kills and a .324 hitting efficiency, while Kuhnn added 16 kills. Roth and Brewer had 28 and 13 assists, respectively,

Lowrey served three aces and led the team in digs with 25. Others with double-digit digs were Kuhn with 18, Woock with 17, Keller with 14 and Roth with 11. Jensen and Miles each had four blocks.

Kuhn moved past the 1,600-kill mark for her career and is up to second for all-time aces with 188.

The Pioneers take on 22nd-ranked University of Chicago and Elmhurst University on Saturday.
