Pioneer netters tune up for MWC Tournament with pair of Senior Day victories

GRINNELL, Iowa - Grinnell College's volleyball team tuned up for next week's Midwest Conference Tournament with a pair of wins to close the regular season on Senior Day Saturday.

The Pioneers wrapped up MWC play with a 25-13, 25-15, 25-14 win over Lake Forest College to begin action in Darby Gymnasium. With that win, Grinnell tied the school record for league wins with seven against just one defeat.

The Pioneers followed with a five-set thriller, outlasting Luther College 23-25, 25-13, 21-25, 25-16, 15-11.

Kaylin Kuhn '22 inched closer to the Grinnell career records for kills and aces. She now has 1,679 kills, three shy of Dinah Zebot's record, and 195 aces, three off of Courtney Sapp's mark. She also moved up to seventh for career digs with 1,253.

Grinnell lit up the net with a .347 hitting efficiency against Lake Forest. Kuhn hit .481 with 16 kills, while Malaina Miles '24 had seven kills while hitting .600.

Julianna Roth '22 and Emily Brewer '24 had 25 and 10 assists, respectively. Kuhn added five aces and 11 digs, while Jenna Keller '24 came up with three blocks.

Kuhn, Anna Killin '23 and Rachel Woock '23 had 22, 13 and 10 kills, respectively, against Luther. Roth distributed 26 assists and Brewer 18. Double-digit digs went to Kuhn (19), Keller and Payton Lowrey '22 (16 each) and Roth (12). Killin also had four blocks.

Kuhn has 442 kills this season, fifth-best in Pioneer history, and her 52 aces rank 10th.

As a team, Grinnell's 2021 season total of 1,482 kills ranks fourth all-time. The Pioneers are fifth in assists and aces with 1,330 and 238, and seventh in digs with 2,038.

Grinnell, 19-13, will take on Illinois College in the opening round of the MWC Tourney Friday at Mount Vernon.
