GC women's swimming and diving team holds off league rival Lake Forest for Monmouth Invite title

MONMOUTH, Ill. - Grinnell College's women's swimming and diving team got big efforts from several performers as it edged Midwest Conference rival Lake Forest College for the title at Saturday's Monmouth Invite.

Grinnell finished the four-team meet with 141 points to beat out the Foresters by seven.

Sophia Carroll '25 was a four-time winner for Grinnell, while Nikki Schlegel '22 posted three wins.

Carroll was first in the 200- and 500-yard freestyles in 2 minutes, 1.51 seconds and 5:23.57, respectively. Both times narrowly missed the program's all-time top 20.

Carroll was also on the winning 200 medley and 400 freestyle relay teams. The medley squad, which also included Schlegel, November Brown '23 and Camryn Gonzales, swam 1:55.14. The freestyle quartet, which also had Schlegel, Kailee Shermak '25 and Aliya Swearngin '25, finished in 3:48.22.

Schlegel also won the 100 backstroke in 1:02.45, Brown was first in the 100 breaststroke in 1:11.67 and Shermak took first in the 100 freestyle in 57.57.

Grinnell had three runners-up, including Gonzales in the 100 butterfly. Her time of 1:01.22 ranks 18th in program history. Other runners-up were Brown in the 50 freestyle (26.25) and Mae Bernacchi '24 in the 100 breaststroke (1:14.14).

Grinnell competes at Loras College next Saturday.
