Carroll's victory sparks big first day for Grinnell women at Pioneer Classic

GRINNELL, Iowa - Competing in her first-ever Pioneer Classic swim meet, Grinnell College's Sophia Carroll '25 made the most of her debut Friday.

Carroll raced to victory in the 500-yard freestyle at Russell K. Osgood Pool in 5 minutes, 21.68 seconds. That time was nearly a second faster than the runner-up and ranks 16th in program history.

In the first major meet at the pool in nearly two years, Grinnell was second among nine teams with 359 points after the first day. The Pioneers trailed only nationally-ranked Gustavus Adolphus College.

Carroll was also on the runner-up 400 medley relay team that finished in 4:10.79. Completing the quartet were Olivia Pluska '25, Eva Cuevas '25 and Camryn Gonzales '25. Sophie Wojdylo '22 added a runner-up finish in 3-meter diving with a score of 353.75.

The Pioneers claimed third-place honors in the 200 freestyle relay, as Kailee Shermak '25, Enya Gamble '22, Aliya Swearngin '25 and Carroll finished in 1:43.85.

Emmie Smith '23 added a seventh-place finish in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:21.08.

The meet continues at 9 a.m. Saturday.
