Grinnell rides 5 event victories to runner-up finish in women's division of Pioneer Classic

GRINNELL, Iowa - Five event victories paved the way to a strong second-day performance for the Grinnell College women's swimming and diving team at the Pioneer Classic.

 
Sophia Carroll '25 had three of those wins at Russell K. Osgood Pool Saturday, leading the Pioneers to a runner-up finish with 1,044 points. Gustavus Adolphus College won the 11-team event with 1,665.5 points.
 
Carroll was tops in the 200-yard freestyle, 400 individual medley and 1650 freestyle with times of 1 minutes, 58.31 seconds, 4:52.74 and 18:29.31, respectively. Her 200 freestyle time ranks 10th in program history and 1650 freestyle is 11th.
 
Other champs for Grinnell Saturday were Sophie Wojdylo '22 in 1-meter diving with a score of 355.05 and Camryn Gonzales '25 in the 200 butterfly in 2:14.99. The time by Gonzales is 12th all-time at Grinnell.
 
Grinnell got runner-up finishes from Eva Cuevas '25 in the 400 individual medley (4:57.21), Gonzales in the 100 butterfly (1:00.91) and November Brown '23 in the 100 breaststroke (1:09.99). The time by Gonzales is 15th in program history.
 
The Pioneers were also second in the 200 medley relay with Olivia Klein '24, Brown, Gonzales and Carroll (1:53.94) and 800 freestyle relay with Cuevas, Maree Elliott '24, Kailee Shermak '25 and Carroll (8:24.65).
 
Shermak, Carroll, Aliya Swearngin '25 and Nikki Schlegel '22 were third in the 400 freestyle relay in 3:46.90, the same placing as Cuevas in the 200 breaststroke. She had a time of 2:37.46.
 
Placing fourth were Mae Bernacchi '24 in the 100 breaststroke (1:11.93), Kendra Howard '24 in the 100 individual medley (1:05.65) and Emmie Smith '23 in the 200 breaststroke (2:38.28). 
 
Olivia Pluska was fifth in the 100 and 200 backstrokes in 1:02.86 and 2:16.26. Both times are 18th in program history. Bernacchi added a fifth-place finish in the 200 breaststroke in 2:38.85.
 
Taking sixth were Smith in the 100 breaststroke (1:12.35), Shermak in the 100 freestyle (56.74) and Carroll in the 200 breaststroke (2:39.42). 
 
Klein also had a spotlight performance in the 100 backstroke as her time of 1:02.99 ranks 19th all-time at Grinnell.
 
Grinnell's next action will be against Connecticut College on its winter break trip.
