Grinnell softball team finishes 2021 campaign with dominating performance

MONMOUTH, Ill. - After collecting just two hits and committing five errors in Tuesday's opening game, the Grinnell College softball team bounced back with a dominating performance in the nightcap.

Grinnell pounded out 12 hits and got a two-hit, seven-strikeout pitching performance from Kathryn Vermeulen '24 to record a 9-1, six-inning win over Monmouth College in the season finale for both teams.

Alexa Okada '24, Taylor Durak '24, Lizzy Vermeulen '24 and Mary Webb '23 each had two hits for Grinnell, which finished at 9-7 both overall and in the Midwest Conference South Division.

The teams traded runs in the first inning, with Grinnell's coming on Lizzy Vermeulen's RBI single through the left side.

Kami Anson '24 bashed an RBI double down the left-field line in the second inning to give the Pioneers a lead they would never relinquish. Grinnell made it 3-1 in the third when Lizzy Vermeulen scored on a wild pitch and Okada hit an RBI single in the fourth to make it 4-1.

Grinnell all but put the game away with a five-run outburst in the sixth with five runs. Anson hit an RBI infield single, Durak knocked in two runs with a single to center and Samantha Chu '24 followed with another two-run single to center.

Monmouth, 6-20 in all games and 5-11 in the division, scored one run in the fourth inning of the opener and two more in the sixth. Grinnell's hits came from Webb and Anson.
