Grinnell men's tennis team stretches MWC title streak to 17 with shutout victory over Foresters

MONMOUTH, Ill. - The streak continues.


The Grinnell College men's tennis team saw to that Friday afternoon by shutting out Lake Forest College 5-0 for its 17th Midwest Conference title in a row and 23rd overall.

The Pioneers improved to 9-0 on the season as they qualified for the NCAA Division III National Tournament for the 14th season in a row. Grinnell, which has shut out its last 14 MWC opponents, has a 164-match winning streak against league foes dating back to the 2002-03 season.

Grinnell swept through doubles with little trouble, as Henry Bridgers '24 and Ishaan Tibrewal '21 won 8-1 at the third spot, Michael Conlin-Brandenburg '21 and Jonah Gilmore '24 won 8-0 at No. 2 and Bowen Mince '22 teamed with Leo Esztergomi '24 to win 8-5 at No. 1.

Bowen MinceWinning was not the only award for Mince, as he was named the Elite 20 winner during the event. The Elite 20 goes to the MWC student-athlete with the highest cumulative grade point average competing at a respective sport's championship or tournament event. Mince is a junior mathematics major.

The Pioneers clinched the victory over the Foresters in singles with two seniors getting the decisive wins. Tibrewal gave Grinnell a 4-0 lead with a 6-0, 6-3 decision at No. 5 and Conlin-Brandenburg finished it off with a 6-2, 6-1 victory at the second flight.

Conlin-Brandenburg now ranks 16th at Grinnell for career doubles wins with 65 and 23rd in singles with 51 victories. Tibrewal is 25th in career singles wins with 50.

Grinnell will learn its NCAA Tourney opponent and regional site on Monday. Lake Forest finished its season at 6-3.
