Grinnell volleyball team records first program victory over WIAC foe with sweep of UW-River Falls

MOUNT VERNON, Iowa – Grinnell College's volleyball team made history Saturday afternoon in its three-set sweep of the University of Wisconsin-River Falls at the Cornell College Tournament.

With the 25-16, 26-24, 25-19 victory, the Pioneers posted their first-ever win over a squad from the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) in 20 tries.

Grinnell followed up that match with a 25-18, 25-15, 25-13 loss to Gustavus Adolphus College, a squad receiving votes for the national rankings.

Kaylin Kuhn '22 had an impressive performance in both matches, and saw herself rise to second all-time at Grinnell in career kills with 1,395. That sent her past Suzie Przbylinski and Tamrah Collins. Kuhn now trails only Dinah Zebot, who is at 1,682.

Kuhn also took the career lead in service attempts with 1,038 and went from 11th to ninth in career digs with 1,061 and fifth to fourth in career points scored with 1,623.

Grinnell had a blistering .301 hitting efficiency in the win over UW-River Falls, and Kuhn led the way with a .364 percentage and 16 kills. Jenna Keller '24 added eight kills and hit .294. Emily Brewer '24 tallied 37 assists and 10 digs, while Keller added 14 digs.

Grinnell shot out to a 10-4 lead in the first set and never looked back. The second set was a different story, as UW-River Falls opened an 18-14 lead before Grinnell went on a 9-1 run to take a four-point lead. Kuhn had four kills in that span and Malaina Miles '24 added two. After UW-River Falls rallied to tie things at 24-all, Keller had a kill and the Falcons added a bad set to give Grinnell the win.

The third set was also tight, with the teams battling to an 18-all tie before Grinnell finished things off with a 7-1 run. Kuhn had three kills in that spurt, including the one ending the match.

In the loss to Gustavus Adolphus, Kuhn had 13 kills and Brewer 22 assists. Payton Lowrey '22, Rachel Woock '23 and Keller had 13, 12 and 10 digs, respectively.

Grinnell, 7-5 on the season, plays Central College in Pella on Tuesday.
