Yang comes up big in Grinnell men's soccer team's narrow loss to Wabash

CRAWFORDSVILLE, Ind. - For the second day in a row, the Grinnell College men's soccer team played a tough squad from Indiana to a near-draw.

A day after losing 1-0 to DePauw University, Grinnell rallied from deficits of 1-0 and 2-1 before a goal by Wabash College with 11 minutes remaining propelled the hosts to a 3-2 victory Sunday afternoon.

Grinnell's Academic All-American, Jasper Yang '22, tied the contest at 1-all in the 42nd minute when he put a shot in the lower left hand part of the net. Henry Cladouhos '22 and Sam Heller '23 provided assists on the shot.

Wabash (6-2) emerged from the 1-all halftime tie with a goal five minutes into the second stanza. Not to be outdone, Yang whipped a shot into the top left corner of the net in the 68th minute to force another tie. Zak Serby '25 had the assist.

However, the hosts scored in the 79th minute to retake the lead and hung on from there.

Yang's goals put him up to a team-high seven for the season and 35 for his career, which ranks fifth all-time. Additionally, he jumped from seventh to fifth on Grinnell's career points chart with 81, passing Joey Brown and Antonio DiMarco.

The assist was the team-high second of the season for Cladouhos, while Heller and Bernardo each got their first.

Wabash won the shots battle 11-8, with Yang, Peter Murphy '25 and Serby each getting two shots for Grinnell (3-4). Carter Benson '24 played keeper the entire way for Grinnell and made five saves.

Grinnell opens Midwest Conference play Saturday when Illinois College visits Springer Field for a 1:30 p.m. test.
