GRINNELL, Iowa – Grinnell College's volleyball team benefited from a true team effort in its three-set sweep of Carleton College Wednesday night in Darby Gymnasium.
All 15 players who got into the match recorded at least one statistic as the Pioneers sailed to a 25-19, 25-16, 25-15 victory while improving to 5-3 on the season.
Grinnell posted a whopping .322 hitting efficiency, with
Kaylin Kuhn '22 hitting .419 with 15 kills on 31 swings.
Rachel Woock '23 added seven kills and hit .357, while
Olivia Jensen '22 had five kills and hit .556.
The duo-setter attack of
Julianna Roth '23 and
Emily Brewer '24 resulted in 18 and 12 assists, respectively. Roth and
Payton Lowrey '22 each had four aces as the latter climbed up to sixth on Grinnell's career chart with 129 aces. Meanwhile, Roth moved up to fifth all-time at Grinnell for serve attempts with 866.
Lowrey also had 12 digs and Roth 10. Kuhn was credited with three total blocks.
Grinnell trailed the first set 15-12 before going on a seven-point run. Roth had three aces during that span and
Jenna Keller '24 and Woock a kill each as the Pioneers went on to win by six.
The teams were tied at 5-all in the second set when Grinnell broke things open with an 8-2 run. Kuhn, Keller and Jensen all had kills during that spurt as the Pioneers gradually pulled away.
Grinnell shot out to a 5-1 lead in the third set thanks to two kills by Kuhn, one by Woock and an ace by Lowrey. The Pioneers gradually put distance between themselves and the 1-4 Knights and went on to win easily.
Grinnell is back in Darby Friday for a double dual. The Pioneers face Loras College at 4 p.m. and Augustana College at 8. Loras and Augustana square off at 6 p.m.
