GRINNELL, Iowa - The victories came fast and furiously for the home team on the opening day of the Grinnell Invitational Friday, boosting the host Pioneer women's swimming and diving squad to a big lead.
Grinnell piled up eight event victories at Russell K. Osgood Pool on its way to a 782-point output. The Pioneers lead runner-up Augustana College by more than 300.
Sophia Carroll '25 was in on four event wins Friday and
Nikki Schlegel '22 added three victories. Both swam on the winning 800-yard freestyle and 400 medley relays that finished in 8:25.10 and 4:03.98, respectively.
Olivia Pluska '25 and
Kailee Shermak '25 completed the freestyle team, while
November Brown '23 and
Camryn Gonzales '25 rounded out the medley squad.
Carroll also won the 100 and 500 freestyles in 54.94 and 5:17.36, respectively. The 500 time ranks 11th in program history and 100 clocking is 19th. Schlegel added a victory in the 100 backstroke in 1:01.89.
Completing the list of winners were Brown in the 200 breaststroke (2:27.69), Gonzales in the 200 butterfly (2:15.55) and
Sophie Wojdylo '22 in 3-meter diving (397.85). Brown's time ranks fourth in program history.
The 200 freestyle relay team of Shermak,
Aliya Swearngin '25,
Enya Gamble '22 and Brown took second in 1:43.20.
Olivia Klein '24 was second in the 100 backstroke in 1:01.96, a time that is 14th in program history.
Placing third were Schlegel in the 200 individual medley (2:20.13),
Val Ishchenko '25 in the 100 backstroke (1:02.11), Eve Cuevas '25 in the 200 breaststroke (2:35.08) and
Hannah Sweet '25 in the 200 butterfly (2:24.05). Ishchennko's time is 15th all-time at Grinnell and Cuevas' is 19th.
Cuevas was fourth in the 500 freestyle in 5:31.97, the same placing as
Mae Bernacchi '24 in the 200 breaststroke (2:37.58) and
Maree Elliott '24 in the 100 freestyle (57.15). Fifth place went to
Kendra Howard '24 in the 200 individual medley (2:22.46), Gonzales in the 100 backstroke (1:03.25) and Pluska in the 100 individual medley (1:07.08).
The meet continues at 9 a.m. Saturday.
