Another stellar day propels Pioneer women to GC Invitational crown

GRINNELL, Iowa - The home squad continued where it left off after Friday's action, easily dominating the field to claim the women's team title at the Grinnell Invitational swimming and diving meet.


Grinnell won nine event titles Saturday at Russell K. Osgood Pool and defended its 2020 title with 1,564 points, easily ahead of runner-up Augustana College's total of 905.

November Brown '24 and Sophia Carroll '25 each won three event titles for the Pioneers. Brown was first in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1 minute, 7.87 seconds and 50 freestyle in 25.14. Those times rank sixth and 14th in program history, respectively.

Carroll was first in the 1650 freestyle in 18:07.35 and 400 individual medley in 4:45.13. She narrowly missed the meet record in the former while swimming the sixth-best time in program history. Her individual medley clocking ranks 10th all-time.

Brown and Carroll combined with Nikki Schlegel '22 and Camryn Gonzales '25 to win the 200 medley relay in 1:51.10, which is tied for 10th all-time in program history.

Schlegel won the 200 freestyle in 2:03.47 and Gonzales the 100 butterfly in 59.63, which is 10th all-time at Grinnell. Other wins came from Val Ishchenko '25 in the 200 backstroke (2:13.66, tied for 11th all-time) and Sophie Wojdylo '22 in 1-meter diving (403.25).

Grinnell was second in the 400 freestyle relay in 3:44.96 with Schlegel, Kailee Shermak '25, Aliya Swearngin '25 and Carroll. Schlegel added a runner-up finish in the 200 backstroke (2:14.35) and Shermak was runner-up in the 50 freestyle (25.74).

Placing third were Eva Cuevas '25 in the 400 individual medley (4:48.87, 15th all-time) and Gonzales in the 200 backstroke (2:15.60, 18th all-time). Fourth place went to Shermak in the 200 freestyle (2:05.16), Maree Elliott '24 in the 100 butterfly (1:03.27) and Cuevas in the 100 breaststroke (1:12.87).

Genevieve Martinez '24 and Mae Bernacchi '24 tied for fifth in the 100 breaststroke in 1:12.91, while Hannah Sweet '25 was sixth in the 100 butterfly in 1:04.28 and Maria Eure '24 added a sixth-place finish in 1-meter diving with a score of 308.00.
