Grinnell netters collect historic victory over Loras, also knock off Augie

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. - Grinnell College's volleyball team made history Saturday afternoon with the program's first-ever victory over Loras College.
 
The Pioneers, winless in nine previous meetings with the Duhawks in a series that dates back to 1976, bounced back from an opening-set loss to win in four sets. After losing 25-17, Grinnell won 25-15, 26-24 and 25-23.
 
Jenna Keller '24 pounded down 21 kills on 61 attempts, the latter which ranks seventh in program history for a four-setter. Hayley Taka '26 added nine kills.
 
Emily Brewer '24, who moved up to eighth in program history for career assists during the day with 1,336, had 41 in the match. Ella O'Neill had five blocks and Keller four, while the digs department was led by Payton Lowrey '23 with 30. Sophie Weber '25 contributed 19 digs, Rachel Woock '23 added 12 and Keller had 10. Julianna Vajda '24 tallied two ace serves.
 
Grinnell followed up with a four-set win over host Augustana College, recording the victory by scores of 25-17, 21-25, 25-21 and 25-19. It's the second win in a row for Grinnell in the series after eight consecutive losses to the Vikings.
 
Lowrey had 35 digs in the contest, which ranks seventh in program history and third for a four-set match. Grinnell's 101 digs are also among the best in program history in a four-setter.
 
Weber added 14 digs, Brewer had 12 and Woock and Keller 10 apiece. Taka and Nicole Mlynski '26 each had nine kills and Brewer 28 assists. Lowrey and Weber each served up three aces.
 
Grinnell, 12-4 on the season, hosts Simpson College Wednesday night at Darby Gymnasium. The non-conference event begins at 7 p.m.
