Fast start propels Grinnell to win while staying unbeaten in MWC play

MONMOUTH, Ill. - Fast and furious is the perfect description of the Grinnell College women's soccer team's performance against Monmouth College Wednesday.

The Pioneers erupted for three goals in the first 16 minutes and made it stick in a 3-1 Midwest Conference victory over the Fighting Scots.

The win helped Grinnell continue its best MWC start since 2008 while improving to 4-0-1 in the league and retaining its second-place spot in the standings. Grinnell is 6-1-4 overall in extending its unbeaten streak to eight matches over the past month-plus.

The win was particularly satisfying after last year's contest where Grinnell jumped to a 2-0 lead against the Fighting Scots, only to lose 3-2 in overtime.

Jill Paladino '23 scored early and often for the Pioneers, finding the back of the net in the 11th minute and again in the 14th minute. She now has three career goals, all this season. Tali Berk '24 assisted the first goal, her second of the year.

Jane March '24, who entered the contest as Grinnell's leading goal-scorer this season, added to that total in the 16th minute. She now has four goals this year and six in her career.

Monmouth, 0-4 in the MWC and 3-9 in all games, got on the board in the 29th minute to make it 3-1 at halftime. Grinnell continued to roll in the second half for the easy win.

Grinnell owned the shots battle 24-4, including 14-0 in the second half. The total shots by Grinnell was a team-high for the season. Additionally, the Pioneers earned seven corners compared to one for Monmouth.

Reese Komsthoeft '25 had five shots for Grinnell, Paladino and Berk each had four and Giada Bambi '25 three. Coming up with two shots each were Gia Sundaram '25 and March.

Grinnell keeper Elinor Arneson '23 had one save in getting the victory.

Grinnell has a huge MWC contest Saturday at Lawrence University. Kickoff is at 11 a.m.
