WAVERLY, Iowa – Despite seeing its season draw to a close on a blustery Saturday afternoon, Grinnell College's women's soccer team put up a superb fight in a 5-2 loss to 17
th-ranked Wartburg College.
The Pioneers' goal total matched the most the Knights surrendered to any team in 2022. Entering the contest, Wartburg had given up just 11 goals in 19 contests.
Grinnell (11-3-5), competing in the national tourney for the first time since 2006 after claiming the Midwest Conference regular-season and tournament titles, spotted the Knights a 3-0 lead through 23 minutes before
Jane March '24 found the back of the net for the Pioneers in the 32nd minute. It was the team-high fifth goal for March, who boosted her career total to seven.
The score remained 3-1 into halftime before Wartburg (16-2-2) scored twice early in the second half. Not to be outdone, the Pioneers dented the scoreboard in the 67
th minute on a goal by
Keiko Smith '25. It was her fourth of the season.
Wartburg won the shots battle 16-9, with March and
Jill Paladino '23 getting two shots each and Smith,
Gia Sundaram '25,
Reese Komsthoeft '25,
Allison Wehrman '24 and
Beya VanRheenan '26 taking one apiece.
Elinor Arneson '23 posted seven saves in goal for Grinnell.
