Goal in waning seconds by Lake Forest ends title hopes for GC men's soccer team

LAKE FOREST, Ill. - A goal by Lake Forest College with 20 seconds remaining was the difference-maker as the Foresters eked past Grinnell College 2-1 in the Midwest Conference Men's Soccer Tournament title match.

Trailing 1-0 after a penalty kick goal by the hosts in the 29th minute, the Pioneers charged right back to tie the contest at 1-all on Alex Niu Nowakoski's '26 goal in the 35th minute. Braden Nihei '24 started the play with a perfect shot from about 30 yards out along the left sideline. Liu Nowakoski streaked in and headed the ball in front of the goal and into the net past the Forester keeper. It was Liu Nowakoski's second goal and the second assist by Nihei.

That score held until 20 seconds were left when the goal sent the 8-8-3 Foresters into the NCAA Division III National Tournament. Grinnell finishes at 10-8-1.

Grinnell managed 11 shots, with Noah Guyton '23 and Liu Nowakoski taking three each and Peter Murphy '25, Dylan Maddux '25, Caleb Hoereth '24, Matias Bambi '23 and Caleb Burns '24 getting one apiece. Guyton's shot total gave him 82 for the season, a school record.

Grinnell keeper Carter Benson '24 recorded eight saves.
