School record, 3 event victories spark strong opening day for GC at MWC Championshps

GRINNELL, Iowa - A school-record performance and three event victories lifted Grinnell College's women to a spectacular opening day at the 2022 Midwest Conference Swimming and Diving Championships.

 
Sophia Carroll '25 shattered the school record in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5 minutes, 3.15 seconds Friday at Russell K. Osgood Pool. The previous mark was 5:05.54 set by Beth Tshuha in 2016.
 
Carroll also swam on the winning 400 medley relay team that finished in 3:53.68, the second-best time in program history. She was joined by Nikki Schlegel '22, November Brown '23 and Camryn Gonzales '25. Schlegel now has 12 MWC titles in her career and Brown a trio.
 
The other winner was Sophie Wojdylo '22 in 3-meter diving with a score of 423.05, which is an NCAA "B" cut. She has three MWC titles to her credit.
 
As usual, the Pioneers are in a tight battle with Lake Forest College in the team standings. Lake Forest, the defending champ, leads with 278.5 points while Grinnell has 246.5.
 
Schlegel was second in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:10.14 and Gonzales was third in 2:13.04, which is 11th in program history. Brown took third in the 50 freestyle in 24.57 which ranks fourth at Grinnell.
 
Kailee Shermak '25 was fifth in the 50 freestyle in 24.64, which is sixth in program history, and Maria Eure '23 took fifth in 3-meter diving with a score of 320.70.
 
Placing sixth were Maddie Sevier '23 in the 500 freestyle (5:27.66), Kendra Howard '24 in the 200 individual medley (2:14.51) and Bailey Irvin '25 in 3-meter diving (291.25).
 
Maree Elliott '24 was seventh in the 50 freestyle in 25.24, which ranks 19th in program history.
 
Val Ischenko's '25 time of 2:15.84 in the 200 individual medley ranks 20th in program history.
 
The meet continues Saturday and Sunday.
