School record performance lifts Grinnell women into lead at MWC Swimming and Diving Championships

GRINNELL, Iowa - Thanks to a Midwest Conference record performance, Grinnell College's women went from trailing Lake Forest College to leading after two days of the league meet.

 
Nikki Schlegel '22, November Brown '23, Camryn Gonzales '25 and Kailee Shermak '25 teamed up to win the 200-yard medley relay in 1 minute, 46.82 seconds. That beats the MWC Championships, overall MWC and school record of 1:47.65 set by Grinnell in 2015.
 
Grinnell finished the second day of the meet at Russell K. Osgood Pool with 604.5 points, six points ahead of the Foresters.
 
Grinnell also got wins Saturday from Schlegel in the 100 backstroke (57.79, second-best at Grinnell), Brown in the 100 breaststroke (1:06.65, fourth-best at GC) and Sophia Carroll '25 in the 400 individual medley (4:37.17, fourth at Grinnell).
 
The Pioneers' quartet of Carroll, Kendra Howard '23, Gonzales and Schlegel finished second in the 800 freestyle relay in 7:49.10, which is fourth all-time at Grinnell. Also placing second were Shermak in the 100 butterfly (57.17, second at Grinnell), Eva Cuevas '25 in the 400 individual medley (4:41.36, ninth at Grinnell) and Sophie Wojdylo '22 in 1-meter diving (390.60).
 
Gonzales was third in the 100 butterfly in 57.35, which is third all-time here. Howard was fourth in the 200 freestyle in 1:59.25, the same placing as Olivia Klein '24 in the 100 backstroke. Her time was 1:00.22. Howard's time is 13th in program history and Klein's is fourth.
 
Maria Eure '23 was fifth in 1-meter diving with a score of 302.00. Placing sixth were Maddie Sevier '23 in the 400 individual medley (4:56.01), Genevieve Martinez '24 in the 100 breaststroke (1:10.47, 16th at Grinnell) and Val Ishchenko '25 in the 100 backstroke (1:00.30, fifth at Grinnell).
 
Eighth place went to Martinez in the 400 individual medley (5:04.69), Bailey Irvin '25 in 1-meter diving (285.90), Mae Bernacchi '24 in the 100 breaststroke (1:12.41) and Olivia Pluska '25 in the 100 backstroke (1:01.34, 13th at Grinnell). Also for Grinnell, Enya Gamble '22 swam the 19th-best 100 backstroke time in program history with a clocking of 1:01.95.
