Explosive offense, stingy defense combine for dominant win by GC men's soccer team

STORM LAKE, Iowa - Grinnell College's men's soccer team broke out of a two-match losing streak in a big way Sunday, seeing its offense erupt in a 5-0 victory at Buena Vista University.

Grinnell, which hadn't scored in its past two losses, fired off 24 shots while now allowing the Beavers to take even one. The goal and shot totals are the highest for Grinnell since Oct. 13 of last year. The contest was a complete team effort, as 24 Pioneers saw action on the day.

Grinnell (3-4) spread the wealth on offense with goals by five different players, with four of those the first of the season by those individuals. The victory was Grinnell's 10th in a row against the Beavers, dating back to 2007.

Sam Heller '23 began the barrage with not only his first goal of the season, but of his career, when he found the back of the net in the 32nd minute on an assist by Sam Bayliss '24.

Alex Liu Nowakoski '26 followed with his first-ever goal as a Pioneer in the 36th minute, giving Grinnell a 2-0 halftime edge.

A goal by Matias Bambi '23, his first of the season and second of his career, made it 3-0 in the 64th minute on an assist by Noah Guyton '23. Dylan Maddux '25 added his first goal of the season and third of his career in the 72nd minute.

Scoring machine Guyton finished things off five minutes later with his team-high fifth goal, with Caleb Hoereth '24 and Jaxon Willoughby '26 providing the assists. It was the eighth goal of Guyton's career.

Three Grinnell keepers combined for the shutout against Buena Vista (0-5-2), with Carter Benson '24 working a half and getting the victory. Jefferson Kolmer '24 was in goal for 23-plus minutes and Jayson Kunkel '26 just over 21.

Sixteen Grinnell players took shots in the game, with Maddux, Bambi and Heller taking three each and Liu Nowakoski, Bayliss and Corbin Bodamer '26 with two apiece.

Grinnell opens Midwest Conference play Saturday at Illinois College. Action in Jacksonville, Ill., begins at 11 a.m.
