Game Recap: Women's Volleyball | | Ted Schultz

Pioneers start 2022 campaign on perfect note with pair of wins at home tourney

GRINNELL, Iowa - If the rest of the season is anything like the first day, the Grinnell College volleyball team will be in for a fun ride in 2022.

Courtesy of Jenna Keller's '24 second-best hitting percentage in school history, the Pioneers cruised past Marian University of Wisconsin in four sets to open Friday's action of the Grinnell Tournament at Darby Gymnasium.

Then, to finish the night, the Pioneers rallied from a 14-11 deficit in the final set to slip past Saint Mary's University of Minnesota to improve to 2-0 on the season.

In the opener, a 25-18 19-25, 25-12, 25-17 Grinnell win, Keller hit a blistering .778 with 14 kills and no errors on 18 attempts. That ranks only behind the .933 efficiency compiled by Cheyenne Hickox in a 2012 match.

Payton Lowrey '23 added six ace serves, tied for sixth in program history for a four-setter. The Pioneers had 17 aces overall, which ranks ninth all-time.

Besides Keller, Hayley Taka '26 was also in double digits for kills with 10. Emily Brewer '25 dished out 42 assists and Lowrey came up with 17 digs.

Grinnell led the opening set just 20-18 before going on a five-point run to finish things off. Sophie Weber '25 served the final four points.

After Marian tied things with the second-set win, the Pioneers built a 16-12 lead in the third before closing with a nine-point run. Emmy Nyquist '24 served the final eight points and Taka had five kills during the spurt.

Grinnell jumped out to a 7-1 lead in the fourth set and never looked back on its way to victory.

That set up the Pioneers' thrilling 25-22, 17-25, 25-22, 21-25, 16-14 victory over Saint Mary's. Keller and Taka each had 15 kills, Brewer added 49 assists, moving her up to ninth all-time at Grinnell with 839, and Malaina Miles '24 added five total blocks. Lowrey and Brewer tallied 25 and 23 digs, respectively, Keller had 17 and Rachel Woock '23 added 12.

The first set was back and forth, with Grinnell scoring the final two points to eke out the win. After Saint Mary's tied things at one set apiece, the teams were tied at 21-all in the third before the Pioneers finished with a 4-1 run. Taka had two kills during the spurt and Keller an ace and kill.

Marian not only won the fourth set, but broke away from a 10-all tie in the fifth to get to match point at 14-11. However, kills by Keller, Miles and two from Taka put the Pioneers at match point. Miles finished things off with a block, sending the hosts into celebration.

The tourney continues Saturday as Grinnell entertains Concordia College of Minnesota at 11 a.m. and Greenville University at 3 p.m.
