GRINNELL, Iowa – For the second year in a row, Grinnell College combined timely offense and stellar defense to defeat Coe College 1-0 in women's soccer action.
The latest decision came Saturday afternoon at Springer Field, as the Pioneers broke away from a scoreless halftime tie with a
Giada Bambi '25 goal in the 67
th minute.
Grinnell (1-0-1) remains unscored upon in two outings this season, and this outing featured a different keeper as
Maddie Beltramo '25 earned the shutout victory while making two saves.
Grinnell won the shots battle 17-7, but was particularly effective in the second half with a 10-2 edge. That included Bambi's eventual game-winner. On the play,
Jane March '24 delivered a corner kick in from the right side. The keeper for Coe (0-1) made a jumping swat on the ball to push it away from the goal, but an onrushing Bambi headed the ball in from 5 yards out into the lower portion of the net.
Bambi had six of Grinnell's shots with four on goal, while
Carlie Duus '24 added three shots with a pair on goal. March had a pair of shots, with one on goal. Others with shots on goal were by
Keiko Smith '2 5,
Beya VanRheenan '26 and
Tori Thomas '25.
Grinnell hosts its annual alumnae game at 1 p.m. Sunday. The Pioneers jump back into regular-season action at home next Saturday against Carleton College, starting at 3:30 p.m.
