Grinnell bounces back from opening-set loss to dispose of Buena Vista

STORM LAKE, Iowa - Following a rocky start, the Grinnell College volleyball team hit on all cylinders on its way to a four-set victory at Buena Vista University Tuesday.

Buena Vista (2-2) took the opening set 25-19, but then it was all Grinnell as the Pioneers reeled off victories of 25-22, 25-21 to extend their winning streak against the Beavers to three matches.

Grinnell (4-1) got a solid one-two punch at the net from Hayley Taka '26 and Rachel Woock '23. Taka had 16 kills and hit .371 for the night, while Woock added 13 kills with a .273 efficiency.

Sophie Weber '25 and Payton Lowrey '23 came up with three and two ace serves, respectively, and Malaina Miles '24 and Nicole Mlynski '26 combined for two solo blocks and an assist. Lowrey led the charge in digs with 18 and Woock had 17. In the setting department, Emily Brewer '24 had 40 assists.

After losing the first set, the Pioneers found themselves in a 20-17 hole in the second. They quickly got back into contention on the serving of Emmy Nyquist '24, whose run at the line pushed Grinnell ahead 22-20. The teams traded points twice before Grinnell finished things off with a kill by Taka and ace serve by Weber.

A four-point run midway through the third set broke a tie and gave the Pioneers a lead they would never relinquish. Woock's kill finished off the win.

Buena Vista led the fourth set 9-8 when Grinnell made a charge, scoring seven of the next eight points for a 15-10 lead. Mlynski and Ella O'Neill '25 each had two kills in that span and Weber served an ace. The Pioneers never looked back on their way to victory.

Grinnell heads to St. Paul, Minn., this weekend for Saturday matches at Hamline University and the University of Northwestern. The Pioneers' next home action is next Tuesday against Central College.
