GC opens 2023 portion of tennis schedule with split

ST. PETER, Minn. - Grinnell College opened the 2023 portion of its men's tennis season with a split against a pair of tough teams Saturday.
 
Grinnell began the day on a dominating note, blanking the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point 9-0. Grinnell had two shutouts in the match, Wilder Cooke '25 by a 6-0, 6-0 decision at No. 1 singles and the duo of Karch Knoll '25 and Lucas Willett '26 by an 8-0 count at No. 3 doubles.
 
Other singles winners, in order 2 through 6, were Aiden Klass '25 (6-0, 6-4), Spencer Skidmore '24 (6-3, 6-2), Luka Shaker-Check '25 (6-3, 6-1), Simon Kennel '23 (6-0, 6-1) and Charles Yung '24 (6-2, 6-3).
 
Leo Esztergomi '24 and Deuce Daniel '26 teamed up to win 8-2 at the top doubles spot and Sam Rudenberg '25 and Henry Bridgers '24 won 8-1 at No. 2.


Grinnell then battled Gustavus Adolphus College, ranked 17th nationally and sixth in the region. Though the Gusties won 9-0, the Pioneers were competitive in virtually every match and saw Knoll and Willett take their singles opponents to three sets.
 
Grinnell meets Iowa Central Community College next Saturday in Des Moines. Match time is 5 p.m.
