Grinnell gears up for stretch run with 4-set victory over Simpson

INDIANOLA, Iowa - Grinnell College geared up for the stretch run of the season with a big performance Thursday, taking care of Simpson College in four sets in non-conference volleyball action.

The teams split the first two sets, with Grinnell winning the first 25-23 and the Storm taking the second 25-19. But then it was all Pioneers, as they reeled off wins of 25-21 and 25-22 to secure the victory.

Grinnell's Millie Leonard '27 had a career-high 18 kills to go along with a .382 hitting efficiency. Jenna Keller '24 contributed 13 kills.

Emily Brewer '24 compiled 39 assists and three aces for the Pioneers, who are 11-13 overall. Malaina Miles '24 and Leonard each had two blocks, while four players had double-digit digs. Sophie Weber '25 led Grinnell with 16 digs, Emmy Nyquist '24 added 14, Brewer posted 13 and Hayley Taka '26 had a career-best 12.

Grinnell trailed the first set 23-22 before finishing off with a three-point run, with Miles and Leonard each contributing kills. After Simpson took the second set, Grinnell bounced back in the third. Tied at 19-all, Leonard had a kill and Weber a service ace to put the Pioneers up by two. The Storm, who are 8-18, then got a point before a three-point Pioneer run that included a kill by Keller and ace from Brewer. After a Simpson point, the Storm had a service error to give the set to Grinnell.

A four-point run early in the fourth set, that included kills by Keller and Taka as well as a block by Taka and Kylie Snell '27, put Grinnell ahead 13-7. The Storm never took the lead, but got as close as 23-22 before Brewer and Keller knocked down kills to give the match to Grinnell.

Nyquist has played 115 matches in her Pioneer career and 402 sets, figures that rank seventh and eighth in program history, respectively.

The Pioneers face another American Rivers Conference team Friday when the University of Dubuque visits Darby Gymnasium. Match time is 7 p.m.
