Grinnell puts up strong fight against unbeaten Coe before falling by 10

GRINNELL, Iowa - Grinnell College's women's basketball team went toe-to-toe with unbeaten Coe College Friday night, but the Kohawks held on down the stretch to post a 73-63 non-conference victory at Darby Gymnasium.

Boosted by Sara Booher's '25 double-double of 10 points and 12 rebounds as well as four blocked shots, the Pioneers hung tough the entire way. Erin Lillis '24 also scored in double figures for Grinnell (1-2) with 16 points. Bailey Strovers '27 had seven boards for the Pioneers, while Lillis dished out three assists and also had two steals. Reese Stephens '27 came up with two steals, as well.

Coe (4-0) jumped out to an 18-11 lead by the end of the first period and was ahead 33-26 at halftime. The Pioneers made things interesting in the third period. Trailing 43-36, the hosts went on a 5-1 run that included three free throws and a bucket by Lillis to make it 44-41 with 2:21 to go.

However, Coe pulled away and was ahead 51-43 at the end of the quarter. The Kohawks stretched the margin in the final frame, building a 15-point lead in the waning seconds before Carolyn Pierce '27 hit a 3-pointer and Stephens sank two free throws to account for the final score.

The Pioneers recorded a season-high eight steals and six blocks in the game.

Grinnell is at home again Sunday when Waldorf College visits Darby Gymnasium for a 2 p.m. matchup.
