GRINNELL, Iowa – The relays paid off in a big way for Grinnell College's women's swimming and diving team on the opening day of the
2023 Midwest Conference Championships.
The Pioneers won both relay races contested Friday at Russell K. Osgood Pool to propel them to second place in the team standings, just a tad behind Lake Forest College.
Camryn Gonzales '25,
Kailee Shermak '25 and
November Brown '23 swam on both the champion 200-yard and 400 medley relay teams.
Ciara Vogler '26 completed the freestyle squad and
Sarah Lopez '26 the medley team.
The freestyle relay squad won in 1:37.49, just .02 of a second off the school record, while the medley relay team's time of 3:55.81 ranks fifth in program history.
Brown now has eight MWC titles in her career, Shermak has five and Gonzales four.
Lopez was second in the 200 individual medley in 2:12.09, which ranks eighth in program history, and Brown was runner-up in the 50 freestyle in 24.38, third-best at Grinnell.
Third place went to
Sophia Carroll '25 in the 500 freestyle (5:08.07), Gonzales in the 200 individual medley (2:12.51, 12
th in program history) and
Maria Rossi '25 in 1-meter diving (307.00 points).
Vogler swam the fifth-best 50 freestyle time in program history, as her clocking of 24.54 was good for fourth place in the race. Placing sixth were
Greta Dunn '26 in the 500 freestyle (5:20.40, 15
th in program history) and
Regan Stambaugh '26 in the 200 individual medley (2:14.38, 17
th all-time).
Shermak was eighth in the 50 freestyle in 25.01 and
Sophie Juethner '26 swam 24.98 in the 50 prelims, which ranks 17
th at Grinnell.
Grinnell has 243 points after the first day, while Lake Forest is sitting at 272. Action continues Saturday at 10 a.m.
