Grinnell women's tennis team returns to winning ways against UC-Santa Cruz

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. - After losing the first two matches of its spring break trip, Grinnell College's women's tennis team bounced back on a resounding note by toppling the University of California-Santa Cruz 5-4 on Monday.

Grinnell, ranked sixth in the Central Region, jumped out to a 2-1 lead through doubles play with 8-6 wins by Sabrina Tang '23 and Ioanna Giannakou '24 at No. 1 doubles and Mira Manchanda '24 and Erin Jarvis '25 at No. 3.

The Pioneers finished off the win over UC-Santa Cruz, which is ranked 13th in the West Region, with singles victories by Tang at No. 1 (6-3, 6-4), Giannakou at No. 2 (6-2, 7-6) and Jarvis at No. 6 (6-3, 7-5).

Grinnell followed up with a competitive match against 36th-ranked California Lutheran University, losing by a 6-3 count. Tang and Giannakou won 8-6 at the top doubles spots, while singles winners were Giannakou at the second slot (6-4, 7-5) and Lily Perrin '25 at No. 4 (7-6, 6-4).

Tang moved up to second on Grinnell's career singles wins chart during the day with 72, just three shy of the school mark. Tang also has 50 doubles victories, 17th-all-time at Grinnell. The 122 combined wins rank seventh at Grinnell.

Grinnell (11-4) concludes its spring break trip at Chapman University Monday.
