GC men's tennis team opens league play by extending victory streak over MWC foes

MOUNT VERNON, Iowa - Grinnell College's men's tennis team picked up where it left off last season in Midwest Conference play with a 9-0 blanking of Cornell College Sunday.

The victory marked Grinnell's 173rd consecutive in league play, dating back to the 2002-03 season. Additionally, the shutout was Grinnell's 20th in its last 23 meetings with MWC foes.

The Pioneers opened the day with easy doubles victories, those coming from the duos of Leo Esztergomi '24-Aiden Klass '25 at No. 1 (8-2), Karch Knoll '25-Lucas Willett '26 at No. 2 (8-2) and Sam Rudenberg '25-Henry Bridgers '24 at No. 3 (8-0).

Singles winners, in order, were Esztergomi (6-3, 6-0), Knoll (6-4, 6-0), Willett (6-0, 6-0), Rudenberg (6-1, 6-0), Bridgers (6-0, 6-1) and Simon Kennel '25 (6-0, 6-1).

Grinnell improved to 7-4 overall and 1-0 in the MWC, while Cornell fell to 3-7 in all matches and 0-1 in the league.

The Pioneers take on the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire next Saturday in Rochester, Minn.
