GC volleyball team loses nail-biter 5-setter to solid Loras squad

DUBUQUE, Iowa - Oh, so close.

That was the situation the Grinnell College volleyball team found itself in as it lost a five-set marathon thriller to Loras College Friday afternoon.

The Pioneers topped Loras, a team that recently swept nationally-ranked Cornell College, in the first two sets by scores of 25-22 and 25-23. However, the Duhawks rallied for wins of 25-23 and 25-22 to force a decisive fifth set. The final set was tight the entire way, with Grinnell grabbing a 13-12 lead before Loras scored the final three points.

Grinnell posted 13 aces, the eighth-best total in program history for a five-setter. Emily Brewer '24 and Keira Sullivan '24 led the way with four aces apiece.

Jenna Keller '24 had 16 kills, Hayley Taka '26 posted 15 and Sullivan contributed 10. Brewer dished out 47 assists and Millie Leonard '27 had five total blocks. In the digs department, Sophie Weber '25 had 28, Emmy Nyquist '24 and Keller added 17 apiece and Brewer tallied 12.

Grinnell followed with a three-set loss to Augustana College, with the Vikings winning by scores of 25-19, 25-19 and 25-14. Keller led the team in kills with 10 and Brewer added 25 assists. Weber had 19 of the team's digs.

During the day's matches, Brewer moved up to 14th in program history with 96 career aces and Nyquist jumped to 14th in career sets played with 386.

Grinnell, 7-9, plays Wartburg College and Coe College Saturday in Cedar Rapids.
