Grinnell women's swimming and diving team starts off season on strong note

GRINNELL, Iowa - Senior leaders Sophia Carroll '25 and Camryn Gonzales '25 guided Grinnell College's women's swimming and diving team to success in its season opener Saturday at Russell K. Osgood Pool.


Each swimmer won four events as Grinnell defeated the University of Nebraska-Kearney 232-64 and Iowa Central Community College 244-22.

Carroll posted individual victories in the 100-yard, 200 and 500 freestyles in times of 56.84, 2:03.10 and 5:39.02, respectively. She also swam a leg on the winning 400 freestyle relay team that had a clocking of 3:50.67.

Gonzales was also on that relay team along with Aliya Swearngin '25 and Samantha Cook '27. Gonzales and Swearngin combined on the winning 200 medley relay team with Sarah Lopez '26 and Bella Takata '28. Their time was 1:53.20. Gonazles added individual victories in the 50 freestyle (25.68) and 100 butterfly (1:01.03).

Lopez posted wins in the 200 butterfly (2:13.35) and 200 individual medley (2:17.92) and Takata won the 100 breaststroke in 1:10.10, the 16th-best time in program history.

Maya Comer '28 was first in the 1000 freestyle (11:29.01), Molly Ryan '27 won the 100 and 200 backstrokes (1:00.94 and 2:14.32), Jane Markovitz '26 won 3-meter diving (177.11) and Eva Cuevas '25 took first in the 200 breaststroke (2:34.40).

Individual runners-up for Grinnell were Megan Gawlick '28 in the 1000 freestyle (11:34.20), Maria Rossi '25 in 1- and 3-meter diving (153.98 and 151.55) Cook in the 200 and 500 freestyles (2:04.93 and 5:39.76), Olivia Pluska '25 in the 100 backstroke (1:02.87), Vivian Woare '28 in the 100 and 200 butterflies (1:01.37 and 2:14.81, with the latter ranking 16th in program history), Swearngin in the 50 and 100 freestyles (25.93 and 57.55), Lopez in the 200 backstroke (2:15.50), Takakta in the 200 breaststroke (2:34.86) and Cuevas in the 200 individual medley (2:21.11).

Grinnell is at the Simpson College Relays next Saturday.
