Pioneers set school record for assists in a match during 8-2 Senior Day victory over Beloit

GRINNELL, Iowa - Senior Day was a record-breaking day for the Grinnell College men's soccer team.

All signs pointed in a positive direction from the start, as David Zhou '25 recorded the first goal of his collegiate career just 31 seconds in as the Pioneers trampled Beloit College 8-2 at Springer Field.

Grinnell, which has won four in a row, set a school record with eight assists. The team's 24 total points are second all-time, as were the three assists by Dylan Maddux '25. Grinnell had 32 shots, eighth-best in program history, and the eight goals rank 10th.

The Pioneers, who limited Beloit to four shots, owned a 17-1 edge in corner kicks while improving to 3-2-1 in the Midwest Conference and 7-4-5 overall. The visitors slipped to 1-6 in the league and 2-15 in all games.

Zhou's goal, one of the fastest in program history, came shortly after Grinnell gained possession following Beloit's opening kickoff. Maddux gained possession and whipped the ball to Zhou in the box, who took a few dribbles and sent it past the diving keeper.

Grinnell made it 2-0 in the 18th minute as Oliver Northing '26 worked down the right side of the box and sent a pass into Samuel Gojjam '27, who fired a close-range shot from the box.

After Beloit scored, Ezra Gould '27 made it 3-1 in the 26th minute with his first goal of the season and second in his career. Anthony Hong '27 began things with a corner kick from the left side that bounced out to the top of the box where Gould gained possession and fired a bullet into the net. Zak Serby '27 added a goal just two minutes later when he lined up for a free kick about 7 yards in front of the box. His line drive bounced off the crossbar and into the net.

Gojjam made it 5-1 by halftime with his team-high seventh goal in the 33rd minute. Demi Oni '27 had a great touch running down the right side of the field and fed Gojjam in the box, who needed just one touch to send the ball into the net. It was Gojjam's 11th career goal.

The Pioneers kept things going just a minute-plus into the second half when Soma Suzuki '25 scored his second goal of the year and fifth in his career on an assist by Maddux. Maddux delivered a pass from the left side into the box, which Suzuki tapped into the goal.

In the 58th minute, Northing scored his third goal of the season and 14th in his career on a double assist by Jack Pennachio '28 and Gojjam. Pennachio sent a pass to Gojjam just on top of the box and the latter tapped the ball left to Northing, who fired in a shot.

Grinnell finished its scoring in the 66th minute when Maddux raced through the middle of the field and lofted a pass in the box to a streaking Anthony Hong '27, who promptly scored on a short shot. Maddux has eight assists this season, which ranks fifth in program history. Grinnell's 38 assists are second-most and the 110 points rank fifth.

Gojjam led Grinnell's offense with five shots, while Hong added four and Northing three. Taking two apiece were Serby, Owen Wilson '25, Pennachio, Gould, Nick Fahmy '26 and Jake Brecknock '28.

Jayson Kunkel '26 earned the win at keeper for Grinnell.

The Pioneers are back in action Tuesday at Monmouth College. Kickoff is 3:30 p.m.
