Pioneer netters see stellar season come to an end with MWC Tourney title match loss

Grinnell loses 4-setter at Cornell

MOUNT VERNON, Iowa - Grinnell College's volleyball team wrapped up one of its most successful seasons in program history Saturday with a four-set loss to Cornell College in the Midwest Conference Tournament title match.

After Cornell won the first set 25-16, the Pioneers stormed back to take the second 25-22. The Rams followed with wins of 25-13 and 25-16 to secure the championship and spot in the NCAA Division III Tournament.

Jenna Keller '25 finished her amazing Grinnell career with 10 kills and 10 digs. She wound up with 1,114 kills, sixth-best in program history. Emily Brewer '25 and Sophie Weber '25, whose career success mirrored that of Keller, added 19 assists and 13 digs, respectively. Brewer finished her career with 3,348 assists and Weber 1,615 digs, both third all-time.

Gracie Lim '28 served two aces for Grinnell and Kylie Snell '26 posted a career-best six blocks. Millie Leonard '27 added four blocks and Ella O'Neill '25 had three.

After Cornell  won the opening set, Grinnell dug a three-point hole in the second before rallying. Grinnell went ahead for the first time at 7-6 on Keller's kill, and later built its cushion to 17-14 in a streak that included a kill by O'Neill.

Cornell hung tough, though, tying the match at 22-all. But Grinnell responded, as Keira Sullivan '27 had a kill, the Rams followed with an attack error and Sullivan and Snell combined on a block.

The Pioneers built a 4-3 lead in the third set, but the Rams raced back to win that set and the next. With a 21-10 mark, Grinnell finished with the third-most victories in program history. Cornell advances to the NCAA Tourney with a 19-11 record.

A thorough recap of Grinnell's additions to the school record book will be published this coming week.
