GC volleyball rally comes up short in battle of MWC unbeatens

Cornell clinches home court for league tourney with victory over Pioneers

MOUNT VERNON, Iowa - Grinnell College's volleyball team posted a valiant rally, but fell short in a four-set loss to Cornell College in a battle of Midwest Conference unbeatens Wednesday night.

Set scores, in favor of the hosts, were 25-13, 25-19, 23-25 and 25-17.

Grinnell fell to 6-1 in the MWC and 19-9 overall while sewing up either the second or third seed for next weekend's league tourney. Cornell claimed its 12th MWC crown in a row with the victory, improving to 7-0 in league play and 16-11 overall. The Rams will serve as MWC Tourney host.

Emily Brewer '25 leaped up to third on Grinnell's career assists list, posting 27 on the night. That allowed her to pass Olivia Wilks with 3,255, five away from second all-time.

Jenna Keller '25 and Millie Leonard '27 led Grinnell's hitting attack with 13 and 10 kills, respectively. Brewer added three aces and Keira Sullivan '27 tallied three blocks. In the digs department, Sophie Weber '25 had 17, Keller contributed 12 and Gabby Choy '26 had 10. Keller moved her career points total to 1,205, eighth all-time at Grinnell.

After losing by 12 in the first set and then falling in the second, the Pioneers' backs were to the wall. But they didn't blink, instead breaking out to a 5-1 lead in the third set with the aid of service aces by Kylie Snell '26, Brewer and Keller.

The Rams came back, though, to tighten up the match and eventually go ahead 21-19. But the Pioneers answered with a three-point run that included two kills by Leonard.

After Cornell tied it, Leonard had a kill and Gracie Lim '28 an ace to put the Pioneers at set point. After Cornell scored, an attack error by the Rams gave the Pioneers the victory.

The Rams built a sizable lead in the fourth set before Grinnell rallied, coming within 16-14 on Choy's serve. But Cornell answered with a four-point run and took the victory from there.

Grinnell closes out the regular season Saturday with a home test against Monmouth. Match time is 1 p.m.
