Grinnell men's soccer team strikes first before falling in MWC Tourney semifinal

Lake Forest rallies to beat Pioneers 4-1

LAKE FOREST, Ill. - Grinnell College struck quickly in its Midwest Conference Men's Soccer Tournament semifinal Friday at Lake Forest College.

But the host and top-seeded Foresters responded, grabbing a 2-1 halftime lead on their way to a 4-1 victory.

The fourth-seeded Pioneers, who were making their fourth trip to the MWC Tourney, finished their campaign with an 8-6-5 mark. Lake Forest, 9-7-3, will play either Illinois College or Knox College in Saturday's title match.

Jack Pennachio '28 got the Pioneers on the board in the 11th minute, gaining control of the ball 20 yards in front of the goal and delivering a shot into the bottom right part of the net for his second score of the season. Dylan Maddux '25, who passed the ball to Pennachio from right to left, was credited with the assist.

However, the Foresters scored two minutes later and added a goal 14 minutes after that to grab the lead for good.

The teams were nearly equal statistically, with Lake Forest holding a 14-11 edge in shots and 4-3 margin in corner kicks. Anthony Hong '27 had three of Grinnell's shots, Samuel Gojjam '27 and Pennachio added two apiece and Peter Murphy '25, Jaxon Willoughby '26, Nick Fahmy '26 and Demi Oni '27 with one each.
