Several records tumble as Grinnell women take big lead at own Pioneer Classic

GRINNELL, Iowa - Records tumbled right and left for the Grinnell College women's swimming and diving team at its own Pioneer Classic Friday.


Grinnell swimmers established one school record and multiple meet records while piling up eight event victories at Russell K. Osgood Pool.

Sophia Carroll '25 established a new GC mark in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 52.79 seconds, breaking the previous mark of 52.82 set in 2022 by Kailee Shermak.

Meet records came from Camryn Gonzales '25 in the 100 butterfly (57.04), Sarah Lopez '26 in the 200 individual medley (2:09.66) and a pair of relays. Aliya Swearngin '25, Samantha Cook '27, Lopez and Carroll set a meet record in the 800 freestyle relay in 8:00.61 and Lopez, Bella Takata '28, Gonzales and Carroll set a meet mark in the 400 medley in 3:57.03. The medley time ranks seventh in program history.

Gonzales' 100 fly time beat the previous meet record of 57.52 by Lopez in the prelims, while Lopez shattered the 14-year-old IM mark of 2:10.08 held by Grinnell's Imelda Wistey. Grinnell had the previous 800 free relay record of 8:03.99 set last year, while the previous medley relay mark was 3:58.88 by Grinnell last year, as well.

Other champs were Carroll in the 500 freestyle (5:10.98), Takakta in the 200 breaststroke (2:27.40, sixth all-time at GC), Molly Ryan '27 in the 200 backstroke (2:09.23, 4th all-time) and the 200 freestyle relay unit of Gonzales, Swearngin, Cook and Carroll (1:38.02, fourth all-time).

Grinnell piled up 1,643 points to easily take the lead in the team standings. Lawrence University is a distant second with 590.

Grinnell runners-up were Cook in the 500 freestyle (5:12.80, fifth all-time), Lopez in the 100 butterfly (57.33, fourth all-time and breaking Wistey's 2010 meet record of 58.47 in the prelims), Eva Cuevas '25 in the 200 breaststroke (2:30.09), Olivia Pluska '25 in the 200 backstroke (2:11.85), Gonzales in the 100 freestyle (53.28, fifth all-time) and Takata in the 200 individual medley (2:14.89).

Placing third were Megan Gawlick '28 in the 500 freestyle (5:23.38), Joely Kam '28 in the 200 breaststroke (2:31.04, 13th all-time), Hannah Sweet '25 in the 200 backstroke (2:17.91), Cook in the 100 freestyle (53.54, ninth all-time) and Vivian Woare '28 in the 200 individual medley (2:16.87).

Placing fourth were Natasha Zettler '27 in the 500 freestyle (5:23.75), Woare in the 100 butterfly (1:00.63, 19th all-time), Eva Rousseau '27 in the 200 backstroke (2:21.81) and Cuevas in the 200 individual medley (2:17.03). Grinnell added a trio of fifth-place finishes - Pluska in the 500 freestyle (5:26.56), Ryan in the 100 butterfly (1:02.20) and Beatrice Durham '27 in the 200 backstroke (2:22.47).

The meet continues Saturday morning.
