3 more meet records fall as Grinnell women dominate Pioneer Classic

GRINNELL, Iowa - Three more meet records fell as Grinnell College's women's swimming and diving squad cruised to the Pioneer Classic team crown Saturday.


New meet marks at Russell K. Osgood Pool came from Sophia Carroll '25 in the 200-yard freestyle (1:53.80), Sarah Lopez '26 in the 200 butterfly (2:07.91) and 400 freestyle relay team of Camryn Gonzales '25, Carroll, Lopez and Samantha Cook '27 (3:35.76).

Carroll and Lopez both bested marks held by Maggie Metz of William Jewell from 2012. The 200 free mark was 1:54.84 and the 200 butterfly record was 2:08.74.

The 400 freestyle relay team's time, which ranks 10th in program history, beat the 2023 mark of 3:36.74 set by Gustavus Adolphus.

Grinnell also won the 200 medley relay with Lopez, Bella Takata '28, Gonzales and Carroll. They swam 1:48.31, which ranks eighth in GC history.

Other winners for Grinnell were Carroll in the 1650 freestyle (18:01.24), Takata in the 100 breaststroke (1:07.47, seventh all-time), Molly Ryan '27 in the 100 backstroke (1:00.32), Eva Cuevas '25 in the 400 individual medley (4:49.07) and Gonzales in the 50 freestyle (24.06, which ranks second all-time).

Grinnell piled up 3301.5 points to easily beat runner-up Lawrence University, which finished with 1084.

Runners-up for Grinnell were Megan Gawlick '28 in the 1650 freestyle (18:19.73, 10th all-time), Vivian Woare '28 in the 200 butterfly (2:14.60, 15th all-time), Joely Kam '28 in the 100 breaststroke (1:09.82, 17th all-time), Cook in the 200 freestyle (1:54.71, third in GC history) and Olivia Pluska '25 in the 100 backstroke (1:00.34).

Placing third were Natasha Zettler '27 in the 1650 freestyle (18:38.29, 17th in GC history), Cuevas in the 100 breaststroke (1:10.23), Sophie Juethner '26 in the 100 backstroke (1:02.13) and Woare in the 400 individual medley (4:51.12).

Fourth place went to Maria Rossi '25 in 1-meter diving (297.40), Josephine Hopkins '28 in the 1650 freestyle (18:41.43, 19th all-time), Zettler in the 200 butterfly (2:17.68), Hannah Sweet '25 in the 100 backstroke (1:03.41) and Kam in the 400 individual medley (4:59.96).

Zeb O'Hara '28 was fifth in the 1650 freestyle in 19:00.90, the same placing as Kailee Shermak '25 in the 200 butterfly and 400 individual medley (2:21.64 and 5:06.54, respectively) and Cook in the 50 freestyle (25.06). Cook's time of 24.88 in the prelims ranks 17th all-time.
