Grinnell softball team continues tough early schedule with pair of close losses

ROCHESTER, Minn. - Grinnell College's softball team continued its run through a tough early-season slate Saturday afternoon, dropping a pair of tight decisions at the RCTC Dome Tournament.

St. Olaf College clipped the Pioneers 2-0 to start the day, and then Grinnell used some late heroics to force extra innings before falling 2-1 to Luther College.

Grinnell pitchers were sharp throughout the day, striking out four batters and issuing just three walks and two earned runs.

Against Luther, Christin Hartman '24 got the Pioneers off to a strong start with scoreless pitching for four innings. Luther got on the board in the sixth inning and the Pioneers were down to their final at-bat when Jasmine Oda '25 belted a solo homer over the fence to tie the contest.

That forced extra innings, where Luther won it with a run in the eighth. Grinnell had five hits in the game, with Samantha Chu '24 getting two of those.

In the opener, the only scoring was pair of unearned runs by St. Olaf in the first inning. Kathryn Vermeulen '24 fired a three-hitter from the pitching circle.

Grinnell outhit the Oles 4-3, with Oda leading that attack with a pair of hits.

Grinnell (1-5) continues its tough schedule next weekend at the Millikin University Tournament.
