GC softball team posts another pair of mercy-rule victories

GRINNELL, Iowa - Grinnell College's softball squad stretched its mercy-rule winning streak to four on a blustery afternoon Saturday, strolling past Ripon College 10-0 and 21-1 in two five-inning games at the Softball Complex.

Grinnell's run total in the second game is the second-highest in program history, while Kathryn Vermeulen '24 earned the pitching victory to tie the program record for career wins with 32. She threw a five-hitter and fanned two batters. Also in the game, Samantha Chu '24 tied a school record for runs scored with four.

Grinnell (6-2 Midwest Conference, 17-13 overall) had a 15-hit attack in the second game, with Jasmine Oda '25 leading the way with three. Kambria Anson '24 had an RBI triple in the first inning to give the Pioneers the lead for good, and Taylor Durak '24 lofted a sacrifice fly to left.

In the second, Alexa Okada '24 had an RBI single, Durak walked with the bases loaded and Hannah Dykstra '25 hit a two-run single to make it 6-0.

The Pioneers erupted for eight runs in the third and seven in the fourth. In the third, Oda cleared the bases with a three-run double, Okada knocked in two runs with a single, Durak and Lizzy Vermeulen '24 added RBI singles and a run came across on a wild pitch.

In the fourth, after Ripon (1-7 MWC, 5-19 overall) got a run in the top of the frame, Chu blasted a two-run homer, Anne Becker '26 hit a two-run double, Oda added an RBI single and two runs scored on an error.

In the opener, Christin Hartman '24 fired a three-hit shutout and fanned five without walking a batter. She now has seven career shutouts to tie the school record. Grinnell's 10-hit attack was led by Chu, Dykstra, Emma DiGiacomo-Zahller '24 and Oda, who all had two hits.

Oda hit an RBI double in the first, while Dykstra and DiGiacamo-Zahller all had run-scoring singles. Chu hit an RBI double in the second and Durak added a sacrifice fly. In the five-run fourth, Oda hit a two-run double, Durak plated a run with another double and Anson and DiGiacamo-Zahller had RBI singles.

There was again plenty of movement on Grinnell's career chart during the day. Durak tied the school record for sacrifice flies with six and now ranks second in doubles (35), fourth in runs scored (87) and seventh in at-bats (374). Anson is third in career runs scored with 89 and eighth in at-bats with 373, while Okada moved to fifth for runs with 85.

Grinnell plays a twin bill Monmouth College Monday.
