MADISON, Wis. – For the third year in a row, Grinnell College's women's tennis team disposed of North Central College (Ill.) in the opening round of the prestigious Midwest Invite.
The 25
th-ranked Pioneers toppled the #37 Cardinals 6-3 Friday morning at Nielsen Tennis Stadium to move into Saturday morning's semifinal round against 28
th-ranked Denison University.
Grinnell bolted out to a 2-1 lead in doubles play with victories by
Irene Agusti '24 and
Erin Jarvis '25 at No. 2 (8-5) and
Isa Voinescu '26 and
Paige Sargent '27 at No. 3 (8-2). Additionally,
Ioanna Giannakou '24 and
Lily Perrin '25 took North Central's nationally-ranked duo to the limit at the top spot before losing 8-7.
The Pioneers finished off the victory with its singles depth, posting wins at the Nos. 3 through 6 spots with Perrin (5-7, 6-3, 10-7), Sargent (7-5, 6-4),
Utsah Kalra '25 (3-6, 6-3, 10-7) and Jarvis (6-3, 6-3).
Kalra now ranks 16
th in program history for career singles wins with 46 and Perrin is 25
th with 38 victories. In doubles play, Jarvis has 47 career wins which is 23
rd all-time.
At 18-2, Grinnell's win total ranks sixth in program history.
